 It’s Deepika Padukone’s birthday today. The lissom girl turns 26 and is looking forward excitedly to the year ahead. The sultry Bangalorean has been busy for the last two months shooting for Bollywood project, but is now between shoots to spare time for her birthday celebration with family and close friends. We hear that her father Prakash Padukone, mom Ujjala, and younger sister Anisha will celebrate Deepika’s birthday at the new plush pad in Worli, Mumbai, Deepika recently bought. Deepika says she’s already gifted herself the new place as the birthday present, but is now looking forward to spend time with her family and friends on her birthday. Also on her wishlist is to eat some homemade food, preferably south Indian. Meanwhile, friends and colleagues from Bollywood have been wishing Deepika Padukone a happy birthday on Twitter. “Happy birthday. Happy birthday. Love. Love. Karthik. Karthik,” Farhan Akhtar, her Karthik Calling Karthik co-star wished her. “Happy bday babe… Have a super year!!!xoxoxo!” wrote Priyanka Chopra. “Happy birthday most beautiful, get back soon we miss u. Love always,” Arjun Rampal tweeted. “Here is wish one of my most favorite co stars and dearrrr friend a very happy and jovial, filled with love, birthday! Loads of love to you and a lot of blessing. Keep smiling always,” wrote Neil Nitin Mukesh, Deepika’s co-star from Lafangey Parindey. Deepika Padukone herself was quite overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and affection, and thanked everyone. “Thank you all soo much for your love and wishes and making my birthday soo special…X,” she said. |

Lahm: Bayern can be UCL contendersBayern Munich defender Philipp Lahm has predicted a promising future for his team in the coming years. The 28-year-old is confident that the Bundesliga leaders will become fierce competitors in the Champions League in the coming years, with the presence of quality players in the squad. “We have so much quality in the team. We can look forward to a rosy future. We need to keep picking up experience, so we become genuine Champions League contenders at some point. And none of us would object if it was to be this season,” the full-back said on the club’s official website. “In another three or four years, almost all of us will be the perfect age for a footballer. We could go on to achieve a lot over a period of years. “Louis van Gaal set the process in motion, and Jupp Heynckes has fine-tuned it. The players have taken the FC Bayern way to heart.  Expect More Bollywood Gangster Movies in 2012 When Bhiku Mhatre called himself the King of Mumbai, it sent shivers down the spines of many wannabe gangsters, on and perhaps even off screen. That was 14 years back. Though Ram Gopal Varma himself is skeptical about being able to bring Satya back to life, the mysterious tales of the mafia continue to fascinate filmmakers. No wonder why bombs and bloodshed or even dons and their molls, promise to rule the big screen in 2012. While Zilla Ghaziabad recreates the rivalry between two real-life gangs in Ghaziabad, Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur talks about the unsolved mysteries of the coal mafia in Jharkhand. Like the OUATIM sequel, which will primarily be about a love triangle involving two men in positions of power in the underworld. Or even Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout at Wadala that promises to be an elaborate recounting of the famous Indian dacoit Manya Surve’s life. Adds Gupta, “During his time Manya was the only gangster who was a graduate. There are over 820 cases registered against him. So we are getting down to the smallest of small details.” Recreating Satya? Says director Karan Malhotra, “I consider Ramu the god of gangster cinema. No one can emulate what he did. But yes, I have a vision, which I have tried to achieve through Agneepath. The gang-wars in the film do not form the crux of the story, but act as a catalyst.” So while they capture the dark deeds of these antiheroes, their glamorous lifestyles play a major part within the film too. Adds Milan, “In OUATIM, after a long time there was so much colour and extravagance in a film about gangsters. So I think filmmakers are trying to reinvent the genre in their own way.” An offer we cannot refuse He adds, ” We have extensively researched on the rail mafia and discovered that there are many stories which have never been told. So I decided to make this film.” Dibakar Banerjee’s next too sketches out the crime scene back when Kolkata was still called Calcutta.  |

 Don 2, the high octane Indian action film of 2011, remains strong in the Top 10 UK Box Office where it has been since its opening day on 21st December 2011. It’s opening weekend saw it take over £1 million in the UK and .6 Million in the US and Canada. Don 2 is the 5th Hindi UK release to sprint past the £1million mark in its opening week and the 3rd Bollywood production in 2011 to gross over £1million in UK Box office takings (alongside Ra One and Bodyguard). Clijsters into last four in BrisbaneKim Clijsters advanced to the semi-finals of the Brisbane International on Thursday, but second seed Andrea Petkovic was dumped out by Kaia Kanepi. Clijsters looked in excellent form as she beat Iveta Benesova in straight sets, suffering none of the problems of top seed and home hope Samantha Stosur, who was beaten by the Czech in the last round. The Belgian fifth seed, playing in her first tournament since August because of an abdominal injury, ran out a 6-3 6-2 winner to set up a last-four clash with Daniela Hantuchova, who was granted a walkover because of Serena Williams’ withdrawal yesterday. Estonian Kanepi, meanwhile, kept her nerve to claim a 6-1 7-6 (9/7) victory over German second seed Petkovic. After racing through the first set, she tightened somewhat in the second before clinching it in a nailbiting tie-breaker. She will next face third seed Francesca Schiavone, who saved two match points to beat Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic 5-7 7-6 (7/2) 6-3. In the men’s event second and third seeds Gilles Simon and Alexandr Dolgopolov battled through to set up a semi-final meeting. Dolgopolov beat sixth seed Radek Stepanek 4-6 6-3 6-3, while Simon was a 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 winner over Santiago Giraldo. The other two quarter-finals, including top seed Andy Murray against doubles partner Marcos Baghdatis, will take place on Friday. |
