Will 2012 be a year of big fat Bollywood weddings?

Will 2012 be a year of big fat Bollywood weddings?
It’s wedding season in Bollywood as many celebrities are planning to tie the knot early next year
Saif Ali Khan – Kareena Kapoor
Dating since: 2007

One of the most awaited weddings of the Hindi film industry; rumour mills have been speculating about actors Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan’s marriage ever since the couple revealed they are dating, until Saif’s actor sister Soha spilled the beans about their wedding plans. “They (Saif and Kareena) are looking forward to getting married in March next year,” Soha said.

The dates seem to be pretty close as the groom-to-be too hinted at a February wedding. “We plan to get married in February 2012,” Saif had said.

Professional gain: The couple just might have an added advantage, as their long-awaited movie, Agent Vinod, is tentatively expected to come around the same time as their wedding. The buzz just might get bigger for both Saif,41, and Kareena, 31, personally and professionally.

John Abraham – Priya Marwah
Dating since: 2011

Actor John Abraham has constantly been linked to investment banker Priya Marwah since his split with his girlfriend of eight years, actor Bipasha Basu. Though the 38-year-old doesn’t clear his stand about Marwah, their regular outings together have made everyone believe they are an item. Abraham’s recent confession about getting married, however, rests the case. “It’s my wish to get
married soon. I would love to settle down in life. It is human nature. There was a time when I did not want to get settled down, but today, I want to,” he said.

Professional gain: With many of his movies bombing at the box office, Abraham’s sinking career seems to have already got a new lease of life with Desi Boyz, perhaps the special lady in his life is proving to be lucky for him. She just might get him back on track.

Ritesh Deshmukh- Genelia D’Souza
Dating since: 2007

They are in! They are not! Dating since their debut flick, Tujhe Meri Kasam, actors Ritesh Deshmukh, 32, and Genelia D’Souza, 24, have constantly denied their relationship for the last eight years, until they started making public appearances together last year. Rumours are rife that Deshmukh’s family was apparently not happy with the relationship because of personal reasons. Regardless, the actors got engaged last year. Deshmukh again denied the same despite the two being spotted going on regular shopping sprees in Mumbai. They are, however, now reported to get hitched early next year.

Professional gain: February might just be the month of double jubilation for the real life couple, as they also have their flick, Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya, up for release on February 17. If the film turns out to be a hit, they could become another real life Bollywood couple starring in films together.

Soha Ali Khan – Kunal Khemu
Dating since: 2010

Their relationship might not be the talk of the town as compared to Soha’s brother Saif, but the actor has reportedly decided to settle down with her actor beau Kunal Khemu, 28, in the coming year. “I am in a comfortable space. We are both independent, with our careers going well. We have met each other’s parents and have their approval,” Soha, 33, had said recently. It might not be as big as Saif and Kareena’s upcoming wedding, but the guest list of the event will surely have some big names.

Professional gain: Apart from a couple of movies together, Kunal and Soha might get lucky on the ad front, with endorsements falling in their kitty. Maybe, the magic that didn’t work on the big screen, might work on TV.

Vidya Balan- Siddharth Roy Kapur
Dating since: 2010

Their eyes met while Vidya Balan, 33, was shooting for UTV’s production No One Killed Jessica, which was executive produced by Roy Kapur, and since then they have been spotted taking long walks together by beach sides in Goa. Speculations were also rife during the shooting of The Dirty Picture that they have clandestinely got hitched, but Balan denied saying, “I am enjoying my courtship period now.” Sources close to the actor have, however, confirmed that Balan will soon get a new surname in the coming year.

Professional gain: While this might be a first-of-its-kind marriage between an actor and a corporate head in Bollywood, their wedlock just might make Balan a regular in her hubby’s films.

USC to restore and release John Carpenter’s first Student film

usc to restore and release john carpenters first student film 70665 470 75 USC to restore and release John Carpenters first Student film

John Carpenter geeks will be glad to know we’ll soon be able to trace him back to his cinematic roots.

Captain Voyeur is John Carpenter’s first film. It’s an 8-minute, black and white short shot in 1969, which was unearthed in the archives of University of Southern California.

As it’s the famed horror director’s first ever project it will be restored and released with the help from the National Film Preservation Foundation.

Captain Voyeur was written and directed for Carpenter’s introductory film class.

Captain Voyeur has thematic and visual ties to Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween. One scene in particular is said to have a predominent link to Halloween:

“The voyeur puts on a pair of glasses over his mask, much in the manner that Michael Myers wore glasses over the bed sheet covering his head in the Halloween prologue.”

The man responsible for this amazing find, Dino Everett has said: "Captain Voyeur follows a man at a boring computer job who eyes a woman at work and follows her home. He dons a mask and attempts to kill her but is shot by his co-worker."

Once the film is restored we expect the film to be available on DVD release and online, so soon we can see where the legend first began.

Are you excited to see Captain Voyuer? Let us know!

Lady Gaga Merries The Night At KIIS FM’s Jingle Ball In LA (PHOTOS)

Posted: 04 Dec 2011 05:16 PM PST

Not to be confused with the Jingle Bell Ball that Rihanna appeared at last night, there was another concert titled after the ubiquitous holiday tune with an equally-enticing roster of talent, including Willow Smith, David Guetta, and Lady Gaga. Can you guess which of these KIIS FM Jingle Ball performers A) climbed atop a giant motorcycle in a long black evening gown, and B) appeared in a hospital smock and mint cap and pretended to be in a mental ward? Why, yes, that would be Gaga, re-enacting parts of her “Marry The Night” epic (but with male nurses this time). Naturally, the Cheerio-guzzling nudist had a couple costume changes throughout the night, wowing us as ever with her showmanship and style.

Divyendu Sharma In Remake Of Chashme Baddoor

Divyendu Sharma In Remake Of Chashme Baddoor

The casting of David Dhawan's version of Sai Paranjpye's 1981 cult comedy Chashme Baddoor just got even more interesting. After signing Pakistani pop star Ali Zafar for Farouq Shaikh's part, and Tamil star Siddharth for Ravi Baswani's part, David has now signed the relatively-unknown Divyendu Sharma to play the pivotal third protagonist . Divyendu who shot to a certain kind of unexpected fame with his performance as the love-smothered cynical and abusive character Liquid in Luv Sinha's sleeper hit Pyaar Ka Punchnaama, bagged the role in a most bizarre manner.

After casting Ali and Siddharth, David couldn't seem to find the right face and personality to play Omi, the part Rakesh Bedi played with laconic humour in Paranjpye's film.

Then one day David saw Divyendu in an ad where he was selling satellite channels with his two room-mates. David immediately saw his Omi in Divyendu who after his punch-filled role in Pyaar Ka Punchnaama was waiting for the Next Big Role.

Says Divyendu, "Yes, I am doing David Dhawan's Chashme Baddoor. I am a big fan of Sai Paranjpye's films and I've seen her Chashme Baddoor a number of times. This is just the break I wanted after Pyaar Ka Punchnaama."

Says David, "I wanted someone spontaneous, funny and intelligent to play Rakesh Bedi's part. You see, with Rishi Kapoor and Anupam Kher in the cast and with Ali and Siddharth playing the two heroes, the third actor has to sparkle on screen. I saw that spark in Divyendu. Very bright actor. I am having a ball directing him and the rest."

Divyendu will now spend some time with Rakesh Bedi to get to know more about the character, although he intends to play it in his own way.

Pakistan bans The Dirty Picture

Posted: 04 Dec 2011 10:13 AM PST

43758 Pakistan bans The Dirty Picture
The Dirty Picture has been banned in Pakistan. The censor board of the country has objected to the screening of the film for reasons yet unknown.

However, it can be presumed that the ban comes as the film directed by Milan Luthria has received an adult certification in India itself.

According to reports, producers Balaji Motion Pictures are not aware of the ban. A similar ban came for Aamir Khan’s Delhi Belly because of some objectionable content.

Since the country is infamous for piracy, it is unlikely that the masses will never get to see the film at all. It is another thing that the producers will not be able to earn anything.

The Dirty Picture is based on the life of 80′s sultry south siren Silk Smitha. It has Vidya Balan essaying her role and she has already received rave reviews during the promotions. The film also has Emraan Hashmi, Tushar Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah in pivotal roles.

Review : The Dirty Picture Picture

dirtypicture1 Review : The Dirty Picture Picture

Review : The Dirty Picture Picture

Intermittently, real life is far more appealing and compelling than fiction. And a biopic — which attempts to recount a person’s life story or at least the most historically momentous years of his/her life — is most demanding for not just the storyteller/s, but also the actors who bracket together with those films. Occasionally, a dash of some imaginary anecdotes are incorporated in biopics, since the moviegoer seeks some diversion and entertainment in a movie, besides enlightenment.

The general feeling is, THE DIRTY PICTURE is a biopic on the life and times of Silk Smitha, a sought-after actress of the 80s. I personally feel that THE DIRTY PICTURE draws inspiration from the struggling female actors in the 80s, whose insurmountable and indomitable spirit made them emerge triumphant and create a distinctive space for themselves in the male-dominated industry. It’s a recreation of an era, with the makers seeking motivation from a lot of characters to create this one woman. Having said that I’d like to add that it’s easier to take a recognizable route, to opt for the tried and tested, but it’s frightfully difficult to be diverse. Producers Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor are known for accepting challenges and backing films like LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA, RAGINI MMS and SHOR IN THE CITY and along with director Milan Luthria and writer Rajat Aroraa had successfully recreated the bygone era with flourish in ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI. Now THE DIRTY PICTURE fires all powerful bullets to stir your mind’s eye.

Let me clear this at the very outset. THE DIRTY PICTURE not only draws attention to the life of a sex goddess, but also makes us responsive of the catastrophe behind the facade. Silk — the principal character in THE DIRTY PICTURE — provides titillation to millions of viewers, but dies a forlorn and heartbreaking death. She battles fame, fortune and alcohol. Brave, daring and provocative, THE DIRTY PICTURE doesn’t cross the line into impropriety and offensiveness.

Envisage a junior artist who became the most sought after female protagonist of the early 80s. Chronicling the meteoric rise and steep fall of a screen sensation, THE DIRTY PICTURE is set against the colorful and entertaining setting of the South film industry of the 80s.

The quintessential siren, Silk, knew her spectators and it didn’t seem like anything would stop the intensely motivated starlet, till it did, in the shape of unrequited love. To the world, she was the queen of sensuality. But, at heart, Silk was just another woman craving for true love. An unfortunate encounter with deceit and infidelity led to dire consequences!

First things first! Milan Luthria is brave and intelligent. Brave, because Milan steps out of the comfort zone to narrate the tragic story of an actress. Intelligent, because THE DIRTY PICTURE does not develop into a dry and depressing fare at any juncture. This one stresses on — as Vidya puts it — entertainment, entertainment and entertainment. Well narrated and wonderfully executed, THE DIRTY PICTURE is sure to strike a chord with the avid moviegoer. I’d like to give brownie points to Rajat Aroraa’s dynamic script and razor-sharp dialogue. The riveting screenplay and power-packed dialogue will remain etched in our memory for a long, long time, eliciting a similar response like ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI. The writing holds the spectators’ interest and doesn’t let you digress from the screen, except for a few minutes in the post-interval portions. The portions between Emraan and Vidya slows the narrative, though, I’d like to add, it picks up dramatically when Vidya gets conned by a maker of porn movies. The sequences thereafter, right till the finale, take the film to the crescendo again.

THE DIRTY PICTURE is embellished with several powerful sequences. Note the sequence when Vidya convinces/seduces Naseeruddin Shah, after he refuses to work with her. It’s remarkable. Also, the first encounter with Emraan Hashmi. Noteworthy! Much later, the volatile sequence at the awards ceremony [the intermission point] is amongst the highpoints of the enterprise. The second hour has its share of super moments as well. The one featuring Vidya outside Anju Mahendroo’s mansion is super. Vidya’s interaction with the two women [individual sequences, both] — with Naseer’s wife first and Shakila, the dancer, next — packs a solid punch. Vidya’s interaction with the maker of porn movies is another shocking twist. The finale, of course, moves you no end.

Vishal-Shekhar deliver a good soundtrack. ‘Ooo La La’ is easily the song of the year [rendered brilliantly by Bappi Lahiri and Shreya Ghoshal], while ‘Ishq Sufiyana’ has long legs too. Another striking track is ‘Honeymoon Ki Raat’. The choreography of these tracks [Pony Prakash Raj], especially ‘Ooh La La’, is straight out of the 80s. Bobby Singh’s cinematography is magnificent.

Vidya’s sizzling show and dare-bare act is sure to seize the viewers by complete astonishment. It’s a novel casting because it is nothing like what Vidya has done before and is completely diverse to her image. But let’s give Vidya the due: She delivers an astounding performance, pushing the envelope yet again. It wouldn’t be erroneous to state that Vidya will walk away with the awards for the sterling act in this film. Besides, she carries off the hot attire without making her character look vulgar or tasteless. In fact, Milan and costume designer Niharika Bhasin Khan have ensured that the sexy-looking persona is aesthetically depicted. Vidya had put on oodles of weight to get the look of the character right and the flabby body only adds a lot of authenticity to the character she depicts on the big screen. authenticity to the character she depicts on the big screen.

Naseeruddin Shah, who has been cast as an ageing South Indian superstar, sports wigs, dark glasses and painted moustache, reminding people of the stars of that era. He plays to the gallery, provoking claps, laughs and whistles, thus pulling off the role with élan. One has to credit Emraan Hashmi for willing to take on bold, aggressive characters. I actually wondered what prompted the actor to share screen space with Vidya, who has a meatier role and enacts the central character, but he walks his own path throughout the film. He plays the headstrong, hot-blooded, rebellious director to the hilt. Tusshar is wonderfully restrained in a significant role. His sequences with Naseer and Vidya, both are truly fantastic.

Anju Mahendru is first-rate, reminding people of a real-life lady journo, who was hugely popular for her writings in the 80s. Rajesh Sharma, the film-maker who ‘discovers’ Silk, is outstanding. An actor to watch out for! Shivani Tanskale, enacting the role of Naseeruddin Shah’s wife, is perfect. Mangal Kenkre [as Ratnamma] and Imran Hasnee are adequate.

On the whole, THE DIRTY PICTURE banks heavily on shock-value, sex-value and most importantly, script-value. It’s an exceptional portrayal of an ordinary person’s rise from scratch to extraordinary heights and her subsequent fall. Without doubt, it is one of the most comprehensive scripts to come out of the Hindi film industry in 2011. A film with a universal theme and terrific mass connect, it has remarkable potential to set the cash registers ringing for one more valid reason — entertainment, entertainment and entertainment.
